McGill Powwow

On Friday, Jacob Leon, Madeleine Mees and I manned a booth at the McGill Powwow. We emphasized the number of endangered indigenous languages in Canada (87!) and talked about what we are trying to do to help Mi’gmaq.

We also tried to get people excited about learning Mi’gmaq by letting them know some interesting things about the language – words that English has borrowed from Mi’gmaq, the difference between ninen and ginu, the prefix wenj- and more. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. People were happy to see that we are trying to revitalize Mi’gmaq and seemed to take real interest in the language. It was also great to see some familiar faces from Listuguj.

  1. Hi!

My name is Heather Shaw and have just come across your website as I was looking through the webpage for McGill’s Masters in Linguistics to which I am considering applying for September 2015.

I have to say that Language Revitalization and Reclamation is exactly the type of research and work I am looking to get in to. In my undergrad, my main focus was in Phonetics, Field Work and Documenatry Linguistics but through an unbelievable course on the revitalization of Anishinaabe and the importance of reclamation work, I decided that creating language resources with communities whose languages are endangered is the field I want to contribute to.

I would love to be in touch and hopefully learn more about the work that is going on with Mi’gmaq and how the team is approaching getting people involved to revitalize this amazing language.

I will actually be in Montreal this coming weekend (September 26th to September 29th) to check out the city, since I’ve never had the opportunity to visit. If anyone is available I would love to meet up and discuss the work that you are all doing.

I am so happy to have found your website and sincerely hope we can connect!

    Heather

    • Hi Heather,
Thanks for getting in touch! I’d be more than happy to talk about McGill’s MA program. You can find my email address on our departmental webpage, please send me a message there and we can talk more.
      Best,
      Jessica
